Design students and courses

The Interior Design Institue

Thinking of doing an online course at

www.theinteriordesigninstitute.co.uk

Has anyone done anything similar or with the interior design institute? I am wary of online courses although they do look reputable from the outside.

  • I think more and more people are taking online courses now, we just need to get used to the idea :). The website is not too informative though (as to the contents, validity of the diploma, materials included)... i Ddon't know if there is a standard or officially recognised insitution that could back up the diploma... (I hope you understand what I mean). Did they send you the prospectus?

  • I havent asked for one to be honest. Need to be sure I am serious about this before I waste anyones time.

  • Hunny, don't feel like you are wasting anyone's time by asking for necessary information. Precisely because it is serious, and because you will be paying for your education you need to understand very well what they offer, before making a choice. I think it is great you are going to take the step to study design :)! I think I remember that RT had started a degree or a module in design a while ago, perhaps she can be of help, at least to see if the program they offer at the Interior Design Institute is good. Best of lucks, and I do hope you go ahead with this!!!

  • Hi

May I ask why you want to take a course? Career change? Credentials? Something to do?

I'm not being flippant, but having looked at the prospectus, most of the modules seem to be common sense

& could be researched at a library for nothing.Maybe I'm too old & cynical (set in my ways.)I feel talent must

come into the equation & unfortunately this can't be taught. Personally, I'd do more research, & find out how

anyone who has taken the course feels they have benefited. You are doing the right thing by trying to get

as much feedback as possible. Good luck in whatever you decide to do. Keep us informed.

When I started my business decisions were so much easier.

    Kind regards F.

  • I, uh, well, guess I just have always wanted to do an interior course and have never had the money to do it. But you're right will probably just be wasting my time and money. Talent as you say after all cant be bought.

  • I don't think Frankham implied anything about your talent in particular, it would be a bit radical for anyone to judge talent- or lack of it- just by whatever someone has done using one limited tool (the mydeco planner).

Like with any other discipline in life, and like anyone who starts to study ANYTHING,  you need to count with own "primary source" (sensitivity, sense of harmony, creativity),  but my opinion is that talent needs to  be trained and educated... and that it requires skill to show properly, and skill can only be acquired through practice and guidance.

After that, time will say who's got a talent that makes them stand out from the crowd and be successful in business and who doesn't.

  • Hunny, '

I'm sorry if I appeared to make light of your wishes. I was in no way trying to put you off, quite the opposite

What I meant was some people  take these courses

expect ing  too much & think because they take the course they will emerge as the "new best thing" & although

we should never stop learning, whatever age, we need a little bit of fairy dust & luck.If you take the course for

the right reasons it can only a be good injsight into Interior design.

They provide the facts, you provide the talent, which I'm sure you already have.

Apologies once again. As I said before keep us informed.

    Best wishes F

  • I think judging by your 3D rooms that you are very talented and that if you think you would enjoy doing an

online course you should do it whether or not it leads anywhere, as what is that old  saying...ah yes it's the

journey that counts and not the destination, or something along those lines.

  • Check with your national interior design association and/or interior decorating association.  If you want to pursue either as a career rather than just a hobby, they should list accepted schools/courses.  This way, if you take one of them, you can say you are a 'member of the national (decorating or interior design) association'.
