Small Space Living Problems

Hello Everyone,

I am a final year Product Design student at the university of brighton, my major project theme is 'living in a small space'. As part of my research i am starting this thread to find out any and all problems you have while living in small spaces.

Please post the problems you have encountered while living in small spaces, even if it is just general problem areas e.g the most problematic room is; the living room, kitchen, bedroom etc as this will help me to focus on an area to solve.

Any problems or problem areas in the home are welcome, and who knows you may get someone with an answer to your problem post too.

Your problems and comments will help me to design a product that addresses a real need in the market, solving one, ( but hopefully several), of your everyday problems at once.

Thank you in advance for your posts and comments......

  • I personally think the bed creates the biggest problem within the bedroom. As a designer, a desk can be secondary problem to the bed. Possibly combing these two and possibly storage, wardrobe space can leave lots of ground space.

  • Personally my kitchen causes a massive problem for me!!! i just dont have enough space for all my appliances....

my toaster... every time i want some toast i have to get it out from the cupboard, un-plug something else normally the kettle and use it, then i have to put it away because my other things take up all the counter space i have!!! the microwave and kettle remain out but my toaster and toastie machine and blender and mini grill all live with the plates.

Maybe i just have to many things but i do use them all and i cook so i need the counter space aswell....

For me something that would hold the appliacnes out of the way or hide them yet still allow easy access to them would be great!!!

    Hope it helps

  • I agree with Sandy my kitchen is small! and having everything out like a large kitchen is simply not an option!

i dont have as many things as sandy but my toaster micro and kettle take us so much space i have resorted to preparing food on a chair before!!!

as well as this i have spoons and knife blocks out taking up the rest of the space, it drives me and my wife mad some times. also when we cook large meals we often dont have space to put the washing up.

for us its too much bother to keep taking the toaster and kettle in and out of the cupboards so we deal... kind of.

Anything that could make extra space for or remove appliences form the counter top would be fantastic... while still letting us use them of course... as i do love my toast in the morning :)
