How to make my living room more cosy

 Hi

I am actually very late in the season for trying to cosy up my living room, but it is so cold at the moment, and by the look of the weather forecast this won't be changing any time soon!  Therefore, I am desperately trying to think of a quick, easy and cheap (!) way to make my living room more cosy.

Does anyone have any good ideas on how to make a room more cosy without comprimising on the design asthetics?  I love the pale duck egg blue highlights I have in this room, but am concerned they are too cold for the winter season?

Any ideas?

P.S don't fear, I have taken down the Christmas tree- this is a photo from over Christmas!

  • Curtains would be one way to help make this room more cosy. Another idea you might consider is either more area rugs (layered / collaged makes for a very eclectic chic space) or a much larger one.

  • ok, please do not take to heart what i am just about to say...

i think the 2 brown couches have to go! plus... remember that this will give you extra money to spend on revamping the room is you sell them as second hand couches in the newspaper or something.

if you rid of the couches and bought 2 or 3 comfy beige or powder blue (a mixer of the two colours works also) armchairs you would be well on your way. keep in mind that deep storng patterns in your furniture or cushions makes for cozy'ness' easily.

another point is the art work. try and fill that back wall with something a little larger than the small framed pic you have now. using cheap canvas boards and acrylic paint you can do something yourself with that powder blue that you love.

maybe you could invest in a throw rug as well to drape over the edge of the couch. and also try and consider painting a feature wall maybe with a stencil or wall sticker added to it.

dont get to cozy just dreaming though...

  • One of the best ways to cosy up a room is to use throws on the sofas and then get some warm coloured cushions ( or cushion covers). Look around for some bargains and something in a nice warm colour - golds, yellows, oranges, reds.

You also need some long curtains on the window in the same warm colours and also add cream voile panels as this also warms up a room nicely too. Unless you have a nice view and you dont want to spoil it.

  • Your room is fairly large, but there doesn't seem to be much natural light in it. I think that it would be a mistake for you to go too dark (which is traditionally associated with cosy) for risk of it looking like a dungeon. If i was you, i would make the wall adjacent to the window a feature wall as it is the wall with the most light. To do this, you would have to move the white sofa so the U- shape of the sofas is reversed. That would also give you a clearer pathway from the entrance of the room, without haveing walk through the settees.

I would have some cosy wallpaper on the feature wall. I like the one i have included in my moodboard as it adds a real feeling of softness and cosiness, which i think is needed with leather couches, as they can sometimes feel "cold"...). The bonus is, that it only costs22.99 a roll. It is called Skin, and is made by Albany.

    cont'd....

  • Place the biggest mirror you can find in the centre of it, to reflect all that natural light back into the room. Maybe you have one in the hall or bedroom that you don't use often if you are on a budget. You can buy some inexpensive curtains to stick on those windows which would make it feel more cosy and homely. Last of all, i think that you should get this cosy cow hide throw for the white sofa to snuggle on, and bin the rainbow coloured cushions.
I also think you should move the cabinet over to the other side of the room as it doesnt seem to sit right where it is, but move the lamp to the side table next to the xmas tree where it will come in more handy for reading etc...

  • Dont forget the artists/craft light bulbs - the blue ones!

They will 'lift' a dark room and freshen it bringing more natural daylight into the room.

Keep well away from the Tungsten usual bulbs they will gloom it back up again.

  •  What a lovely high ceiling - your leather sofas, wooden coffee table and orange and blue accents put me in mind of contemporary Arizona decor. There's some good examples in the portfolio at www.davidmiller.com and in the virtual tour of the boutique spa in Scottsdale www.fireskyresort.com. You could go bolder for winter by making up 'winter season' cushion covers in plain but vibrant orange and blue velvet, add a camel brown mohair throw to the white sofa and invest in some matching wooden lamp tables with contemporary cream and bronze table lamps for that cosy evening ambience.

  • If you like throws maybe you can add some throws on your sofas. I find that leather sofas can give that cold contemporary look. However you already have nice touches of the cushions going on. Maybe add some wall art or wall mirror, whichever ones u prefer, or both!
