Not done this before..easy way ?
I'm looking at a solid wooden multi-level plant stand at Daxon and like it. BUT I want it darker. Could I just rub it down and paint with chocolate oil eggshell or metallic bronze paint ? Or do I need to strip all the varnish off and primer undercoat and eggshell ?

I am sure if you painted it using hammerite (which now comes in smooth finish too) you wouldn't need to completely strip it - just key it as you suggest

You could try a tester on the underside to see how it takes.

Thank you both, I will order them this week and give it a go if the underside of the base takes ;) I spotted an ad online with a code to get me 25% off so I won't worry if the idea doesn't work so much.
